Case Study: International Energy Services (IES)
The Challenge
As a leading multinational provider of logistics solutions for fuel and resource industries, International Energy Services (IES) is continuing to expand rapidly across its four core business divisions incorporating fuel and hazardous liquids logistics in Australia and Asia, transport logistics for the Australian and African resources sector and fuel and hazardous liquids handling equipment for the Australian, USA and global regions. The organization had grown to a point where the reporting capabilities of their existing operational and finance systems were no longer providing the in-depth detail of intelligence across their business lines, leading to an investment in BusinessObjects and the business intelligence expertise of Triatin to design and develop operational data stores, data marts and growth of metadata and staging areas to meet business growth.
Comprising of multiple businesses and business lines it has become imperative to the executive team and field operatives that business processes are aligned. An important early step in this process is the alignment of the decision support systems across the organisation in order to support visibility over the whole company. The goal of the data warehouse project has been to deliver a knowledge system that provides a single view of the multiple business lines within International Energy Services to support a quick response time to the varied business questions that arise in order to ensure the organisations agility in meeting the market demands.
The Approach
Excited by the sound, systematic approach offered by Triatin to solving their issues, IES met with a specially formulated Triatin Knowledge team to assess their requirements. Utilizing the Business Objects systems already in place, Triatin recommended an expansion of the datawarehouse through the development of solutions that utilize data collected from the recently introduced portable handheld devices and onboard vehicle monitoring systems.
This project was completed via three distinctive phases. Firstly, clarifying the business vision and views of the business allowed us to create a clearly defined project plan and requirements - including defining the metrics needed by the business to meet their demands and detailed basic data marts to answer the first round of report requirements. Phase two set the development pace, extracting data from the source system into a staging area defining the dimensions of the operational data store and establishing the ETL processes to refresh against live data. Finally in phase three we created extended data marts and ETL processes including slow changing dimensional data, fact aggregates and financial analysis reporting support. Implementation of this system has allowed IES to develop clear and accurate business intelligence quickly on their day-to-day operations. This allows for improvements and efficiencies across the business and opens up new opportunities for cost saving and improving revenue.
The Results
Efficient Business Intelligence is about reporting on the day to day activities of the business bringing management closer to the team at the coalface (drivers and contract managers). Over the past year Triatin have been able to streamline processes for drivers removing unnecessary paper work. As well as providing more accurate logs for better management of occupational health and safety including improved trip management, fatigue management and route management. This has helped reduce maintenance costs and offers safer working conditions. Of the many values the data warehouse offers, it allows IES to consolidate their view across their multiple business lines many business lines: assets, HR and customers- while still ensuring that their individual business still have a clear view of their own parts of the business. Identifying that information is the nervous system of the business IES know that like the trucks and the drivers provide the muscle and the management team provides the brains, information clearly reported and easily available provides the eyes and senses to the business. Behind each handheld device is pure business intelligence - and that equals improved efficiency, reduced costs and a better ability take advantage of opportunities available to IES.
